Mrs. Hattie Flowers visits Ms. Vanessa Johnson's 6th grade reading classes
The sixth-graders at Pike County Elementary School read the story entitled "Mother Fletcher" about a 90+ year old African American woman living in Harlem. She knew all about her community, so Ms. Johnson invited Brundidge's Mother Fletcher, Mrs. Hattie Flowers. Mrs. Flowers is 92 years young! She shared her knowledge of the old days and a lot of history about Brundidge. She said teachers would get 35 cents per month for each child and students had to pay for their book as well as walk 3 miles to school. All chores were completed before going to school and that included milking the cow.
Pike County Elementary's sixth-grade reading classes would like to thank Mrs. Hattie Flowers for her time and the wisdom that she shared with us.
