2nd and 3rd graders in Pike County Schools have spent the last few months studying about the history and heritage of our country.   They have studied about what it takes to become the “Next Great Americans” and about how “you have to do good, to be good.”  During this time, they were asked to nominate people within their community that exemplify the characteristics that “Helping Hand” and “Torch Team” heroes hold.  On April 15, 2016 the three schools within the county met at Troy University to recognize these community heroes.

PCES 2nd graders recognized Mr. Jessie Starks, the great grandfather of Brooklyn Jones, a student in Mrs. Fountains class.  Mr. Starks is 93 years old and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in War World II.  After being released he came back to the United States to marry and raise his 9 children.  The second graders also recognized PCHS Senior Miss Chelsey Holland.  Chelsey is the sister of Vivian Holland in Mrs. Pollard’s class.  Chelsey is very active in sports and many organizations at the high school.  However, her most recognizable contribution is a nonprofit event that she started during her 9th grade year called ‘Runway of Hope’.  In the last four years this fashion show event has raised over $15,000 to benefit the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and families in our surrounding communities.

PCES 3rd graders recognized Mrs. Shantell Rouse.  Mrs. Rouse is a not only our vice principal but a former teacher here as well.  She is very active within the school keeping things running smoothly and is often found cheering students on at after school activities.  Mrs. Rouse is an integral part of her community and church family as well.
