Third 9 Weeks Letter

January 3, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we begin the third nine weeks we are making things a little bit more difficult in order to prepare your child for third grade.

Students will be expected to make sentences with their amazing words. The sentence must use the amazing word correctly, be at least 7 words in length, and begin/end as a complete sentence should.

Reading fluency grades will be based on the end of the year goal which is 96 words per minute.

Spelling dictation sentences should be studied closely because we will no longer call the sentences out. Students will have to write the sentences from memory. These sentences can be found on the weekly homework sheet that is sent home every Monday.

Math facts are now focusing on basic subtraction. Students usually don’t seem to know the subtraction facts as well as they do the addition facts. They will still be given 3 minutes and 20 seconds to complete 40 problems. With that being said, students must know the facts because they don’t have time to count back or use a number line to solve.

Science grades will be based on participation and completion of STEM activities that must be completed in class. Therefore, keep in mind that our science instruction time is from 2:30 until the end of the day. Checking out during this time will cause your student to miss out on valuable instruction, activities, and participation based grades. Each day builds on prior lessons and missing one day can be detrimental to the understanding of science concepts.

Social Studies grades will be from vocabulary words that have been taught throughout the week and can be found on the front and back of the weekly homework sheet that is sent home every Monday. Your student needs to study these words at home daily.

We are beginning to introduce cursive writing and students will be learning a few letters each week. Please encourage your child to complete the cursive homework sheet that will be sent home after learning each new letter. On Fridays, students will be required to complete a cursive writing assignment including letters that have been previously taught for a writing grade.

If students are listening and paying attention in class they will be prepared for the work we assign. Please check your student’s folder daily for assignments and work completed in class. Students should be studying daily for tests.

Please review your students graded papers when they are sent home as these can give you valuable information as to what your child is unable to do and what they need more practice with.

If you have any questions, we encourage you to schedule a conference with your student’s teacher.

Thank you,

Second Grade Teachers
